Description
MEM A 20.8 x 14.7cm copy of "The Myth of Workers' Control" by Arthur Scargill and Peggy Kahn, signed "Best Wishes Arthur Scargill" in blue ink on titlepage. University of Leeds, 1980. Pages stapled into the original black wrappers. Some wear to cover margins and along the spine, some creasing. The pamphlet was conceived during the miners' strike in the 1980s, when Scargill was the President of the Yorkshire Area of the National Union of Mineworkers and Kahn a PhD student in Politics. The publication supports the increase in worker's power through the political action of the unions. Lot also includes an original programme of the "London Miners Gala. 5 Nights for the Miners", stapled into the original decorative paper wrappers, signed and inscribed by Arthur Scargill on the NUM's contribution, 1984. Front cover rather spotted, possibly from old mildew. Ticket stapled onto front inside cover. The programme is made up of testimonials from the trade union, labour movement and support groups. A potent memento of an intense period of industrial conflict. Plus a 14.5 x 22cm "Miner's Right" released by the colony of Victoria (Australia) on "25th Jan 1892" to Alexandra Holden. This licence cost £1 a year and was introduced after some violent riots carried out by miners. The document gave diggers the right to search for gold.
