Item Details
Description
Wood
Italy, presumably Venice, 1510 to 1540
Late Gothic
Woodblock
The canon image – ornamental page of the Canon Missae
Crucifixion
Dimensions: 26 x 19 cm
Good condition
The canon woodcuts were often cut by the most famous artists of the time. The canon woodcuts are missing in most samples today, because they were very popular at all times. That is why it is even more incomprehensible to discover a woodblock of such a canon image

The Late Gothic woodblock from a Canon Missae depicts a crucifixion typical for a canon woodcut. The woodblock originates from Italy, presumably from Venice and was crafted in the period between 1510 and 1540. A crucifixion is depicted in the typical style of the time, surrounded by an ornamented arch of columns. The canon part with the canon woodcut belongs to the most glorious pages of a Missal and was often printed in parchment in the 15./16. century. The canon woodcuts are missing in most samples today, because they were very popular at all times.

A Missal regulates the liturgical order of the celebrating mass. It contains the mass orders (ordo missae) and the prayers, which are sung or spoken in the Catholic mass by the priest. The Canon Missae is the prayer of the Holy Mass of the Roman rite. In early Roman Missals and sacraments there is always first a decoration page with the depiction of the crucifixion of Christ. This sheet is called the canon image. The prayer itself begins afterwards with the words ‘Te igitur clementissime Pater ...’ (= Most merciful Father …).

The woodblock is in good condition with traces of wear. Corners and edges are more heavily bumped. In the upper center is a fracture. There are two old drilled holes. On the front are some few worm holes and at the back stronger traces of worms (inactive). The canon image is besides that in excellent preservation. The dimensions are 26 x 19 cm. (tm)
