This is a triton’s trumpet shell from the 18th century. The triton’s trumpet is a nautilus that lives at coral reefs in shallow water in subtropical and tropical seas and belongs to the largest living snails today. The maximum length of the housing are 45 cm, a regular length are 30 cm. It is distributed over the Indopacific region, in East Africa, Polynesia, Japan and New Zealand. The housing with blowing hole was worldwide utilized as a signal horn in the past.
The triton’s trumpet is in good condition. At the mouth are two cracks each of approximately 6 cm length and a small outbreak. The shell is approximately 34 cm in length. (tm)
