Especially the so-called poison rings are known already since antiquity and these served as a requisite for exercise of power and preservation during the Renaissance
The richly adorned, monumental seal ring of an advocate with coat of arms and secret compartment is crafted of iron and bronze with two cameo portrait busts. It originates from Italy from the period of around 1600. The seal is all around richly adorned with bronze ornaments, on top with putto head and on two sides opposing two plastic crafted grotesques. Both further opposing sides are embellished with oval cameo portrait busts. The almost square iron plate contains the seal crest with the depiction of three swords in the shield, the shield centrally standing in the round. When opening the iron plate, a blue velvet lined secret compartment appears. Medicine, small documents, sealing wax or also poison powders were possibly stored therein. Especially the so-called poison rings are known already since antiquity and these served as a requisite for exercise of power and preservation during the Renaissance.
The seal ring is in extraordinary well preservation. The iron shows slight patina. The dimensions are 7 x 4.5 x 4.5 cm (height x width x depth). (tm)
