LI Keran (1907-1989)

LI Keran was one of the most popular Chinese painters of the 20th century and was particularly known for his depictions of the water buffalo. The latter became his symbol of China's humiliation, which combined submission and strength. From 1923 LI Keran studied at the Art School in Shanghai and was taught by painters such as QIAN Shichi. Six years later LI Keran joined the Academy of Fine Arts of Hangzhou. During this time he was inspired by Western oil painting and joined the ‘progressive artist society’. In 1937, after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese war, he worked in the political section of the military council of the national government.



Condition: The condition is good with slight signs of wear. A spot in the lower right corner and crease marks in the left corner are visible. The total dimensions are 32.5 x 43 cm.
