S-008 Purple Heart grouping of Naval aviator Herman W. Smith, who was killed during a training missing on 10 April 1944. Includes: (1) Purple Hwart with a "split" brooch. With ribbon and Naval presentation case. Unnamed. (2) Death accolade with the original mailing tube. (3) Letter of condolence to the widow from the Secretary of the Navy. Ink signed "Frank Knox". (4) Similar letter from John S. McCain (grandfather of the current U.S. Senator). Ink signed "J. S. McCain". (5) Similar letter from the Navy commodore of Atlantic Fleet Airships. Ink signed "G. H. Mills". (6) Similar letter and certificate from the Army and Navy Commission of the Lutheran Church. (7) Two Navy Honorable Discharge Certificates with information concerning two previous enlistments. Dated "1933 and "1937". (8) Photos - portrait of wife, two large Navy group photos, large photo with automobile and 9 I.D.-type photos. (9) 1942 Flight Log Book with many entries. Also a home recording disc with 2 Christmas songs. (10) Miscellaneous - USN I.D. certificate, two-page assignment roster for 1941, three letters written to wife on Unit stationary. Miscellaneous envelopes and a "REPORT OF DEATH". II
