Samuel Palmer RWS, British 1805-1881- ''The Bellman'' publ. by the Fine Art Society, 1879; etching, signed and inscribed within the plate S.PALMER. INV. ET. FEC. MEAD. VALE. REDHILL 1879, lettered The Bellman from ''Il Penseroso.'' Published by the Fine Art Society 148, New Bond Street, London, 1879, 18.7x25cm Provenance: exhibited at Goldsmiths' Gallery, London, 'Graham Sutherland Exhibition', according to label attached to the reverse Provenance: From the art collection at the former St Gabriel's College, Camberwell. St Gabriel's was a Church of England teacher training college, founded in 1899 and closed in 1978. Its Art Department attracted talented teachers and artists whose vocation was to inspire young teachers through studying and imitating the work of great artists. The paintings and drawings in this collection were collected by the College's staff through donations and purchases during the interwar and post-war periods. After the College's closure, the collection was transferred to the ownership of an educational trust and until recently loaned to Goldsmith's University of London.
