Hans Hartung (1904-1989)

Hans Heinrich Ernst Hartung was born in 1904 in Leipzig. He worked as a painter and graphic artist. As an early teenager, he turned to the non-objective painting. In 1924, he began studying art history and philosophy at the University of Leipzig. After living in Menorca and in Paris, he received the French citizenship in 1946. After the war, Hartung became one of the most important exponents of the informal art. He exhibited several times at the documenta and at the Venice Biennale in 1960. Hartung's works are often recalling to the Chinese ink painting. (cko)
