In 1963 the artist duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude realized the project ‘Wrapped Vespa’ as one of the first works from their series of wrapped objects. This print shows a double seat Vespa, which is wrapped with threads into a fabric. More wrapped projects followed, for example the wrapped coast in Sydney (1969), the wrapped Pont-Neuf Bridge in Paris (1984) and the wrapped Reichstag in Berlin (1995). The depiction was chosen for a poster of the ‘Early Works 1958-59’ exhibition at the Martin-Gropius Bau in Berlin in 2001.
The work bears the complimentary signature upper center in brown crayon ‘Christo’. The sheet is in print titled, dated and annotated, and it bears the photocredit and the publisher. The print is in very good condition with handling creases. The dimensions are 59.2 x 84 cm.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude
Christo (born 1935) grew up as the son of an industrial family in Bulgaria. Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009) is the daughter of a French military family and she was educated in France and Switzerland. Jeanne-Claude died on 18.11.2009 in New York City. Christo studied from 1953 to 1956 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. In 1957, he studied for one semester at the Academy of Arts in Vienna. Since 1958, he lived in Paris where he and Jeanne-Claude met. From very early on in his artstic activity, Christo began wrapping objects. He followed the idea that the act of wrapping makes visible the banality and the excess of most objects that exist in our world. Jeanne-Claude always supported him in the realisation by negotiating with mayors, interest groups, environmental activists and residents to receive approval for the projects. (tm)
