FERDINAND LO PINTO CORDOVA ALASKA SUMMER 1937 WPA Ferdinand Lo Pinto (American, 1906-1980), gouache on board, titled on verso "Alaskan Summer", Cordova Alaska, 1937, signed bottom right, framed under glass in wooden frame. =========================================== A painter, designer illustrator, and sculptor, Ferdinand Lo Pinto was a member of the WPA* New York Easel Division, and one of 13 artists sent for the Alaska Federal Art Project (the project went from June to November, 1937; it was to be until December, but it was the rainiest summer on record, so the Artists were not able to do all seventy paintings as contracted to do.) He illustrated with pen and ink drawings A Guide to Alaska. He was trained at the National Academy of Design* and the Art Students League* in New York (until 1937) and studied with sculptor David Smith. He worked in New York City from 1920 to the 1950s, when he moved to Pennsylvania. According to his resume, his work was shown in group shows at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts, New York City; The Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C.; The Carnegie Institute, NY World's Fair; Gallerie Vendome, Paris, France; Venice International; Brooklyn Museum; Chicago Art Institute; Yonkers Museum; and Golden Gate Exposition* in San Francisco, California. He had two solo shows: The Contemporary American Arts (NYC), and Art Center, NYC (Alfred Stieglitz selected his work for it). He did two murals, one for the "Hall of Man" at the NYC Worlds Fair, the other at the Federal Court House, Anchorage, Alaska. and he did many stage sets for the Public Theater WPA* productions in NYC.
