Description
Federal Period watercolor painted theorem. A downwardly pointing mourner in empire dress leans against the monument of John Hale who died August, 17th, 1815. Urn finial is inscribed "Memento Mori". The subject is set below a willow tree in a fenced cemetery with pond and a Meeting House surrounded by houses, trees and hills. A reverse gilt and painted mat identifies "Abigail Newman" as the artist. Housed in a gilt Federal Period frame with rope set molding. Provenance: Caldwell Farm, Byfield, MA. Note: Abigail Newman was born in 1803. She was the granddaughter of John Hale (1736-1817) of Newbury and the daughter of Phoebe Hale and Samuel Newman of Federal Street, Newburyport, MA. She married David Story Caldwell in 1827 and died in 1888 at the age of 85.
