Description: This is a very fine Old carved wooden mask from the Kuba peoples of the Congo, central Africa. This mask may have represented a wise older man at boys initiations called "Pwoom itok". The chief identifying characteristic is the shape of the eyes, whose centers are cones surrounded by holes through which the wearer sees. Like many Kuba types of masks, pwoom itok is extensively polychromed, or multicolored. This mask features wonderful exaggerated brows and many layers of kaolin clay pigment suggesting many years of actual use. The artist has achieved a wonderful expression and emotion in this example. a professional custom display stand is included with this lot.
