Footnote Chinese Suanpan abacus dated to the 19th century. These counting frames were known back in the IndoChinese region as early as 1100 BC. The traditional abacus consists of a combination of five beads on the lower and two beads on the bottom. Each of the lower beads carries a value of one, each of the upper beads carries a value of five. It is known that this ‘zhusuan’ technique from this ‘suanpan’ abacus instrument can solve complex arithmetic.
