James[Captain, Harris Battery of Missouri Light Artillery] Jason W. Memories and View Points. Roswell New Mexico. Privately Printed, 1928 1st Edition. 183 pp. Original Cloth. A near fine copy with the presentation inscription from the author on the front flyleaf. An important work containing the varied reminiscences of an eventful life. Jame's first military service was with Johnston's Utah expedition against the Mormons in 1858. When the Civil War broke out he volunteered for the Confederate Army and served for four years, first as a Corporal in Clark's battery of Missouri Light Artillery and later as a Lieutenant in Farris' battery of Missouri light Artillery. He states that he took part in fourteen battles and provides a detailed description of the fight on the Lum plantation near Vicksburg. James includes a chapter on Reconstruction in Louisiana and gives considerable space to his activities as a member of the Ku Klux Klan both in Louisiana and New Mexico. Full details of his ranching on The Rio Grande in the 1880's and his life in New Mexico are also included. A fine memoir of a fascinating life. Quite scarce. Adams (Herd)1148. Flake 4316. Graff 2190.
