While in Paris, Roerich designed the sets and costumes for Stravinski's Sacre du Printemps" for Diaghilev's Ballet Russe. When invited to show his paintings in the United States in 1920 at the Art Institute of Chicago, his work caused a sensation. Subsequently the work was shown in many cities in the United States. Roerich spent the summer of 1921 on Monhegan Island, Maine, completing a series of painings called the "Ocean Series" (Roerich Mus., NYC). He spent many years in India, portraying the people and mountains of Tibet. Established the Roerich Foundation, a world peace movement, in 1932.
