Carl Lewis Pappe (Ohio/Mexico, 1900 - 1998) 30" x 24" oil on masonite of a Tasco village scene. Signed, "Carl Pappe - Taxco," lower left. Carl Pappe was born in Hungary in 1900. He showed an early interest in drawing. When he was five years old, his father imigrated to the United States. Six years later, they were reunited in Lorain, Ohio. From 1921 to 1925, he attended the Cleveland School of Art. He enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts through a scholarship by The Hungarian Society. He studied under Hugh Brechenridge and Daniel Garber from 1925 to 1926. Pappe visited Mexico City in 1934 where he met his future wife, Bernice Goodspeed, who became a designer of silver jewelry and authored a book on Mexican folklore, illustrated by Pappe. He was friends wtih contemporaries Diego Rivera, Carlos Merida, Juan O'Gormand and Ruffino Tamayo. He was an admirer and friend of the sculptor, Isamu Noguchi. He settled in Tasco, in the Sierra Madre Mountains. His Taxco street scenes are among the collections at the Library of Congress. Well listed artist.
