Item Details
Description
The American expatriot Impressionist painter Francis Brooks Chadwick (1853-1943) painted this lovely and refined oil portrait in France in 1924. The canvas is 36"x29", and is in a new frame measuring 33"x40" The painting was found in a Boston, Massachusetts estate and was in need of cleaning and lining. An inscription was discovered on the back of the canvas during restoration. It reads "Belong to Mrs. F. B. Chadwick"(sic) and is written in an area which was covered by the stretcher. To preserve it, the painting has been lined onto clear Plexiglas, and the stretcher cut away to reveal the full inscription. During cleaning, the artist's signature and the date 1924 were discovered in the upper right mid-section of the canvas, painted faintly in a color similar to the background. Because of the location of the inscription and a multitude of old tack holes in the tacking edges, the canvas appears to have been brought from France un-stretched, and re-framed in Boston sometime in the 1940's. From Wikipedia: Francis Brooks Chadwick (1850 Ð 1942), was an American painter active in France. He was born in Boston and studied at Harvard, and to pursue his interest in art he attended the AcadŽmie Julian in Paris. He was friends with the painter John Singer Sargent and traveled with him to Haarlem in 1880. The following year he married the Swedish painter Emma Lowstadt and they settled in Grez-sur-Loing, where he remained the rest of his life, though the couple travelled to other summer art colonies on vacation. From Cornwall Artists: Painter from Boston, Massachusetts, who had worked at Concarneau at the same time as Jules Bastien-LePage. Though little known today, Francis Chadwick was an important and innovative figure in the American art world in the late nineteenth century. Like his friend John Singer SARGENT, Chadwick was a portrait, figure and landscape painter, and both became part of the expatriate American art community. Other than Mary Cassatt, and perhaps Sargent himself, Chadwick may have been the earliest American painter to join the Impressionist movement, and he was the most established figure in the important artists' colony in Grez sur Loing in France where he spent almost all his professional career. The painting is in excellent restored condition. Item ID: 4065B_
