Description
Walter Morton (1870-1892) painted this landscape in 1891, the year before he died, only 21 years old. Judging by this early landscape titled "Grass Valley," he was a talented and trained painter. The town of Grass Valley, California was a mining community, and after some research, it seems to be the location depicted. This painting shows the local mill and hills beyond. The painting was preserved by a descendant, Lester Lee Soule, and appears to be the only surviving painting to surface onto the market. The painting is unsigned, but titled and attributed, and signed by Lester Lee Soule on the stretcher bars. See the photos for some of the inscriptions. Canvas size is 25" x 20" Frame outer size= 29"x24.5" The canvas has been lined, cleaned and retouched. A final coat of archival non-yellowing varnish with ultraviolet light stabilizers brought back the contrasts and finely painted details. The painting has been mounted on the original hand-crafted wooden stretcher frame. It is installed in a new custom-made, period-style frame. All work was performed in our studio.
