The DAX model is one among many other chairs’ designs of the American designer couple Charles and Ray Eames. The armchair was created in 1948-50. This chair has seen a long development process through the years, changing from bentwood to molded plywood and finally to fiberglass reinforced polyester, a material that was then used exclusively for radar screens. With this material, a series of chairs was designed, with the first one-piece, non-upholstered seat shell, making it a very popular piece of furniture even today. One of the great advantages of these chairs is the light weight, thereby enabling easy transportation to wherever they are needed; a feature that was completely new at the time. The chair was manufactured by Herman Miller Co. It has a grey seat shell and the so-called ‘X-base’.

The chair is 82 cm high, 65 cm wide and 63 cm deep. It is in very good condition with minimal signs of age and wear.

Charles (1907-1978) & Ray Eames (1912-1988)

Charles Eames (1907-1978) studied at the Washington University in St. Louis and opened his first architecture office in 1930. In 1940, he won the ‘Organic Design in Home Furnishings’-Competition of the MOMA in New York and was named head of the Industrial Design Department of the Cranbrook Academy of Art in the same year. He married his second wife Ray (1912-1988) in 1941 and they became one of the most known and popular design couples of the 20th Century. Their designs for Hermann Miller, for whom they designed complete product lines, were new, unusual and most of them are design milestones.

Herman Miller Inc.

The company has started in 1905 under the name Star Furniture Company until it was taken over by Herman Miller and named thus. He won such names as George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames for his company. Since 1957, Vitra has bought the rights to produce the Eames furniture from Herman Miller. (cru)
