Ornamental tribal art with figural carvings

This water-drum was made of wood around 1960 and originates from the eastern region of the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea. The drum with curved handles displays rich figurative and ornamental carvings of fish and human figures. The latter wear traditional cloths and jewelry made of fiber. Their eyes were made of sea shells.

The water-drum is inscribed on the upper edge and is in good condition showing common signs of age and use such as dryness cracks and slight bumps. There are a few old worm holes as well (inactive). The wood is faded due to exposure to sunlight. The dimensions are 138 cm.
