Diameter: 10.5 cm; height: 16.5 cm
Provenance: Private collection, Argentina
Ceremonial bowl with sculpturally modeled figural representation

This handmade bowl of andesite was used for sacrificial ceremonies by the Peruvian Chavin Culture. The upward tapering walls of the vessel are divided into several segments which are decorated with half Inca crosses in the form of vertical bands. The front shows a small standing figure, perhaps a shaman or head hunter. He carries a small head under his right arm and a sacrificial knife in his left hand.

The bowl was broken in two pieces. It has been professionally repaired, but the seam is still slightly visible. The vessel has a nice patina and shows minor traces of age and wear. The height measures 15 cm and the diameter is approx. 9 cm. (tfa)
