This veil, called niqab or yashmak was traditionally worn by Bedouin women. The colorful piece of fabric is hand-embroidered with Turkish coins. In Bedouin culture women are the keepers of the family wealth, which they display for all to see. The more coins sewn onto a veil, the wealthier the family. Missing rows of coins would indicate that the family had to pay debts, medical expenses or the like.
The veil is in good condition with significant signs of age and wear. The dimensions are 21 x 21 cm, the weight is approx. 693 g. (tfa)
