Description
Fire in the Lamp Stand

Lovely portrait of the court beauty Yanagihara Naruko lighting a lamp. The mistress of the Meiji Emperor and mother of the Taisho Emperor, she draws back the sleeve of her kimono with one hand as she reaches into the lamp to light the wick. Her robe is shaded from tan to pale blue with a design of flowering wisteria, and she holds a roll of tissues between her lips. Kimono are draped over a black lacquer stand at left, and a folding screen at right features a maple tree with colorful autumn leaves. A charming image, beautifully detailed with fine embossing in the white kimono trim.

9 1/2" x 14 1/8" + margins as shown
Condition
With excellent color and detail. Some light paper remnants in left margin. Slightly curled. Some wrinkling and creasing in subject as shown. Some rubbing, soiling and minor fraying at edges. A couple small holes repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
