Description
Attacking a Monk, 1857
Dramatic kabuki scene of the rogue Kozaru Shichinosuke attacking the monk Jizodo no Sainen. He grips his victim by the collar, holding a large knife behind his back, grimacing angrily. Sainen struggles to free himself, tugging at his attacker's arm. The beauty Okiku watches at left with an eager grin, kneeling next to a fire roaring in a brazier. At right, a samurai emerges through the foliage outside the house, frowning unhappily. The house is rather shabby with cracked walls and torn shoji windows, with a household shrine set up behind sliding panels above a cupboard at left. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro as Okiku, Ichikawa Kodanji as Kozaru Shichinosuke, Bando Kamezo as Jizodo no Sainen, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro as Obo Kichizo. An intriguing subject with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
