Description
Kawasaki Iseo, Spy of the Cavalry, Crosses Alone in the Evening of the 3rd August the Taidong River, Observes Enemy Movements and While Taking a Boat from the Enemy Returns Composedly to His Camp, 1894
Terrific scene of Japanese Sergeant Kawasaki Iseo escaping from Chinese troops during the Sino-Japanese War. After swimming across the Taidong River to spy on the enemy, he stole a boat to return to his side. Dressed only in his underwear and cap, a sword slung around his back, he uses a bamboo pole to shove off from the river bank as the enemy approaches, glaring back at them with a determined expression. Bullets streak across the water leaving orange trails as the troops fire upon him. A great triptych from this historic war, beautifully drawn with soft shading in the water and night sky.
