Ancient Roman oil lamp with a rare frog decor
The Romans oil lamps were produced in masses. Clay lamps were very frequent, because clay was cheaper than metal. The Romans usually used two-piece molds for the production of the lamps. They were often adorned with different decors. The upper part, on which the decor is seen (a frog in this case) is called mirror. There is also the hole for pouring the oil. The wick was inserted into the anterior part of the lamp (snout).
The lamp is in good condition with a few small losses on the upper side. The underside bears the incised number ‘882’. The length is 9 cm. (cko)
