Description
Fired clay
Egypt, Ptolemaic Period
Head of a terracotta of the god Zeus with eagle, in Hellenistic style
Dimensions: 11.2 x c. 7 x 3.5 cm (width x height x depth)
Provenance: Private Collection Bruno Wertz
Scientific research: Dr. Jan Moje, Free University of Berlin (see references below)
A comparable terracotta of Isis is located in the Akademisches Kunstmuseum Bonn (D 506), in the Archaeological Institute Tübingen (4942/25), and in the Egyptian Museum Berlin (9943)

This part of a terracotta figure of the god Zeus originates from the Ptolemaic Period of ancient Egypt (332–30 BCE). The figure depicts the once bearded god Zeus with sceptre, and possibly the shafts of lighting in the left bicep curl, draped in a long coat pulled over the head. He is sitting on an eagle that is turning to the right and moving his head back in order to look at the god. On the head, mainly covered by the cloth, the god is wearing a diadem or wreath, which has become unidentifiable today. This iconography is known since the early Greek time and has been imported to the Greek-Roman time of Egypt to the Nile land. The present type seems to be approaching the role model of Ptolemaic-Alexandrian coins displaying the head of Zeus. Egyptian elements are not to be found in this piece. The object, as well as the iconographic design, is purely Hellenistic.

The terracotta is in well-preserved condition, with usual traces of age. The lower left half is missing. Details are largely weathered. Some staining is visible. The dimensions are 11.2 x c. 7 x 3.5 cm (width x height x depth).
