American, late 19th century. A pair of hand colored lithographs after George Catlin (American/ Pennsylvania, 1796-1872) comprising of "The War Dance" - c.1875, depicting 11 Native American men engaged in a circle of dance, wearing traditional tribal garments and wielding spears and tomahawks, with inscription on plaque below image "The War Dance, From Catlin's N.A. Indian Collection"; and "The Scalp Dance" - c.1875, which depicts a large group of Native American men in traditional tribal dress, many with vicious facial expressions, holding long haired scalps in hand and on stakes, with inscription on plaque below image "The Scalp Dance, From Catlin's N.A. Indian Collection". War Dance framed 21.75" x 27.5", sight size 12" x 17 5/8", sheet size 15.25" x 22". Scalp Dance framed 23" x 28.75", sight size 10.5" x 16.5", sheet size 15.25" x 22".Note: George Catlin is widely regarded as being the first person to observe and document Plains Indians in their natural territory during his travels to the American West in the mid 19th century. In 1845, after many years of painting Native Americans on journeys up the Mississippi River and to the Western United States, he published a 25 plate folio entitled "Catlin’s North American Indian Portfolio" from which these lithographs originate.

Both prints examined out of the frame. Both with little to no foxing to sheet. No signs of mat burn, tears or rips. No holes. Excellent condition overall. Each attached to mat at top with hinging tape.
