Alexander Pope [translator), The Iliad and the Odyssey of Homer, printed 1760, Charles Rivington, London, with illustrated map, owned by Lt. Col. Henry Harnage (British Army Officer under Gen. Burgoyne), with decorative gilt stamped edges, 8 1/2" h x 5 1/2" w. Provenance: Friends of the Stevens Memorial Library, North Andover, MA. Henry Harnage (b. 1739) served in Ireland, the West Indies, French Canada, and the American colony of New York in the Revolutionary War. He was severely wounded at the battle of Freeman's Farm, 19 September 1777. He was in the hands of the colonial forces until 1780, when, after many letters to Gen. Washington and others, he was exchanged and allowed to leave.
