Sir Henry Vane (1613-1662) English politician, Colonial Governor of Massachusetts. Born into the English landed gentry, Vane early rejected the advantages of his class, becoming a Protestant Dissenter. At the age of twenty two, Vane went out to live with his co-religionists in the newly-established American colonies were he was elected Governor of Massachusetts. His belief in universal toleration caused him to loose favor and he returned to England in 1637. Vane opposed the trial and execution of the King Charles I in 1649. In 1654, he left politics. Persecuted by the Cromwell dictatorship, he fared still worse after the Restoration of 1660. In 1662 he was convicted of treason by the Restoration government and beheaded at the Tower of London. 7" x 11" legal document signed "H. Vane," October 1647. Staining in the folds, away from the text and signature.
