William Penn (1644-1718) English Quaker colonizer in America. Penn founded the colony of Pennsylvania in 1681. Upon his father's death, Penn inherited a vast province on the Delaware River in payment for debts owed his father. In 1682, Penn went to his province, where the earliest settlers were already laying out the city of Philadelphia in accordance with his plans. He drew up a liberal Frame of Government for the colony which later served as the inspiration for the United States Constitution. He also established the friendly relations with the Native Americans that were to distinguish the early history of Pennsylvania. 7" x 9" autograph letter signed, two pages, front and back, (no place but written from England), July 25, 1707, to "Noble Friend." "...The bearer...his name Richard House, a younger brother of a good family. Sober, industrious, and qualified for the small station he prays for...He is heartily of principles, to serve ye Govermt. & yt on an English & right Protestant bottom. I beg a letter in his favour to Wm. Dudley, that if in his turne, a vacancy falls he would please to recommend the Bearer to ye Lord for it...." Normal age toning. The paper size is 14" x 9" and is folded in half.
