Francis Bernard (1712-1779) British Colonial Governor. As Colonial Governor of New Jersey (1758–1760), Bernard did much to promote colonial solidarity and to build defense in the French and Indian Wars. When he was transferred to the governorship of Massachusetts, Bernard lost popularity because he felt it his duty to enforce the Stamp Act and other laws the colonists found objectionable. 6" x 7" partially printed document signed "Fra. Bernard," Province of the Massachusetts Bay, May 4, 1763. The document orders payment to Mrs. Rebecca Gibbons for "...ye use of Dctr. John Taylor...to discharge his acct. of med. & Attend. On sick soldiers, in Col. Saltonstall's Regiment..." Light toning with a small break in one fold.
