Robert Treat Paine (1731-1841) Jurist. Paine gained recognition as a prosecuting attorney in the murder trial of the British soldiers involved in the Boston Massacre. He was a member of the Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He also served as Massachusetts' first attorney general (1777-1790) and as a judge in the state supreme court (1790-1804). 6" x 7" autograph legal document signed "R.T. Paine," Court of Common Pleas, Suffolk County, June 21, 1788. The document is a complaint filed by patriot James Lovell, then a collector of import and excise taxes for the port of Boston. He seeks recovery, on behalf of the Commonwealth, the duty on "...fifty eight loaves of white sugar as being unlawfully imported...that it was not duly entered at the Naval Office in the said Port of Boston or in any manner according to Law, and that no Duty has been paid..." Written and signed by Paine as "Libellant.
