Oliver Ellsworth (1745-1807) Jurist, politician. Ellsworth served in the Continental Congress (1777-1783) He became one of Connecticut's first U.S. senators in 1789. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1796, serving until 1800. 8" x 3" autograph document signed "Oliv. Ellsworth," October 16, 1786. The document is an order to pay "...the Bearer, out of the civil list taxes, two pounds - on my Debenture...." There is also an endorsement on the reverse, "O. Ellsworth, Esq in fav of Bearer...." Irregularly cut, as usual.
