William Thornton (1759-1828) Architect. Thornton designed the United States Capitol. He also served as the first Architect of the Capitol and first Superintendent of the United States Patent Office. 7" x 6" third person autograph note signed and initialed in the text. "W. Thornton's best respects to the hon.ble Mr. Stedman and begs he will...present his respectful compliments...to his worthy...father-in-law W. Ellery, with whom W.T. has spent some of the most agreeable hours in his life..." William Ellery (1727-1820) Political leader. Ellery was a signer of the Declaration of Independence from Rhode Island. His endorsement appears on the reverse: "Wm. Thornton's billet to Mr. Stedman concern. Mr. W. Ellery."
