John Nicholson (1757-1800) Financier, businessman. Nicholson became clerk to the Board of Treasury of the Continental Congress in 1778. In 1782 he was appointed the Comptroller General of Pennsylvania. In 1794 Nicholson became a partner with Robert Morris in land speculation and development. Early in the winter of 1799 to 1800, Nicholson was imprisoned for debt. He died on December 5, 1800, leaving a wife, eight children, and more than four million dollars in debts. 8" x 6" pay order, Philadelphia, January 20, 1786, directing payment to John Levering, "late Private of Schotte Corps...." The order is signed by Charles Biddle and approved by Nicholson. Uniformly age toned; two fold breaks.
