Classic suitcase by Louis Vuitton which may still be used as a decorative travel companion

The present suitcase is a classic example of a Louis Vuitton luxury product of the time around 1940. The exterior sides are covered with leather and bear the typical Louis Vuitton all-over monogram pattern. The interior is however simply covered with light beige leather. The leather edges are fitted with the characteristic brass corners and angles. The suitcase has a leather handle at one long side, which is flanked by two brass buckles. A brass lock is located in the center.

The suitcase is in good condition considering its age and reveals a characteristic patina. There are however clear traces of wear on the exterior sides, especially a number of scratch marks and small slightly penetrated areas. Besides, the suitcase shows rests of old labels and traces of green paint. The company’s label is located inside and is numbered with the serial number 790217. The bras lock is numbered ‘132190‘ and lacks of the matching key. The suitcase measures 22 x 60.5 x 39.5 cm (height x width x depth).

Louis Vuitton (since 1854)

Louis Vuitton (1821-1892) started his training as a bag maker at suitcase manufacturer Monsieur Maréchal in 1837 in Paris. This was essential in times of rough luggage transport on carriages, steam boats or trains. He opened his own shop in 1854 under the name of Louis Vuitton Malletier in Rue Neuve-des-Capucines 4. His modern dirt-resistant and waterproof products were of such good quality, that they were soon in high demand. The frameworks of the trunks were made from wood and metal constructions. 1886 Georges Vuitton (1857-1936), son of the company’s founder, invented the revolutionary locking system that is still used today. The patented Tumbler Lock protects the trunk’s content from theft with an innovative locking system with two spring caps. When Louis Vuitton died in 1892, Georges took over the company. It was him who designed and established the iconic LV monogram. The luxury brand is popular worldwide and is one of the leading companies of the world of fashion.
