This cabinet was crafted in 1922 by Jakob Löw after a design by the Austrian architect Otto Prutscher. The body with eight drawers stands on four chunky feet. The drawer fronts are adorned with marquetry showing a deer in a meadow. Original brass fittings enhance the overall appearance. The marquetry on the two doors show scenes inspired by antiquity and features a skillful combination of various veneers. In the centre and between the feet the sideboard is decorated with an open-work figural carving. This magnificent piece of furniture, combining Prutscher’s artistic concept and Löw’s artisan virtuosity, wonderfully expresses the Viennese zeitgeist of the early 20s. It is part of the furnishings that Prutscher designed for the Viennese furniture factory August Knobloch’s Nachfolger.

The cabinet is in good condition with signs of age and wear. On the right a board loose, the boards were probably added later. Small parts of the lower carvings are broken and partly enclosed. A key is included. The central carving is signed ‘J. Löw’ and dated ‘Vienna 1922’. The marquetry of the doors also shows ‘1922 J.L.’ and ‘J.L.’ respectively. The cabinet measures 152 cm in height, 114.5 cm in width and 56 cm in depth. (tfa)
