Furniture designs by Jean Prouvé are quite sought after, even by prominent collectors; his design objects can fetch up to €1,000,000 at international auctions

Jean Prouvé designed a whole range of school furniture, including the present model, which was produced in a small series in the 1930/40's. Characteristic is the associated design of chair and table that was common until the 1960s. Prouvé's designs are considered quite constructivist. Powerfull lines and constructions become explicitly visible, which provide the furniture with industrial character. And yet thoughtful details like am opening for the ink well as well as the notch that serves as pen tray are not to be missed. Prominent collectors of his designs for example include Brat Pitt or Marc Jacobs.

The school furniture is 73 cm high and measures 62 x 80 cm. It is in very good original condition with some signs of age and wear.

Jean Prouvé (1901-1984)

Jean Prouvé was born in Paris in 1901. He trained as a blacksmith with Émile Robert and Adalbert Szabo. In 1924 he established his own workshop in Nancy. In addition, he began designing furniture, which should combine function and aesthetics available at reasonable prices. In 1927 Prouvé made acquaintance with Le Corbusier, followed by his first major architectural designs. In 1929 he received his first patent for sheet steel doors. He was also chairman of the jury during the competition for the construction of the Centre Pompidou. Prouvé's works cover a wide range from letter openers to furniture, facades and prefabricated buildings as well as building systems. He is considered a model for many designers. (afa / cru)
