Heavy Irish George IV silver service by the well-known maker James Le Bass

This set with a teapot, sugar bowl and creamer was made in 1825 by the renowned silversmith James Le Bass. The latter came from an illustrious family of silversmiths. Active in Dublin in the early 19th century, the master Le Bass was known as a ‘good maker’ – a title, which testifies to the high quality of his silverware. The three pieces are richly decorated with fine repoussé work and chasing. One side bears the crest of the Montgomery family with the slogan ‘GARDEZ BIEN’, which can be translated as ‘keep good watch’ – a suitable motto for a family with a long tradition of service in the Garde Écossaise, a unit of bodyguards to the French monarchy.

All pieces are each hallmarked with the maker’s mark ‘I.L.B’ for James Le Bass, the sterling standard, the Dublin town mark and the date letter ‘E’ (1825).

The service is in good condition with light signs of age and wear. The teapot measures 15 cm in height. The weight is approx. 2,258 g. (tfa)
