This flagon from 1863 made by Stephen Smith and William Nicholson is a wonderful piece not only due to its size but also the elaborate decoration, chased and embossed with scrolls, foliage and flowerheads. These opulent embellishments are a characteristic feature of the Victorian era.

The carafe is marked on the side with the hallmark of Smith & Nicholson, the sterling standard, the London town mark, the date letter ‘h’ (1863) and the duty mark (Victoria) as well as hallmarked on the inside of the lid and the finial.

The decanter is in very good condition with signs of age and wear. It measures 40 cm in height. The weight is approx. 1,930 g. (tfa)
