The present silver set, including a teapot, a sugar bowl and a creamer was made by William Bateman I (1774-1850) and his son and successor William Bateman II (c. 1800-1876), who had taken over the London company of Hester Bateman, the most famous silversmith of his time. To date the Batemans are considered one of the finest English silversmiths and their silverware continues to be popular. The three pieces feature a lush decoration with repoussé work and chasing.
The teapot, sugar bowl and creamer are hallmarked on the outside with the maker’s marks ‘WB’ for William Bateman I & II, sterling standard, London town mark, date letter ‘I’ and ‘r’ (1824/1832) and duty mark. The sugar bowl and creamer are each additionally stamped with an ‘H’, the pot bears the number ‘358’ and is also hallmarked on the inside of the lid.
The set is in good condition with signs of age and wear. The teapot measures 13 cm in height and has a diameter of 13.5 cm. The overall weight is approx. 1,182 g. (tfa)
