A Berlin silver piece of the early 19th century. Outstanding design and the finest manual work
The present fine silver work in the form of a cylindrical lidded cup was manufactured ??around 1825/30 by Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Borcke (1789-1839). The upper and lower edge is adorned with a relief-like flower and shell ribbon. The center of the body is decorated with finely chased lines. The hollow-carved handle shows stylized horns of plenty. The lid has a central hole which can be closed by a kidney-shaped slider.
The cup is marked with the maker's mark ‘FWB’, a bear with ‘K’ (first drawing master J.C.S. Kessner) and ‘A’ (second drawing master B.G.F Andreack). It is in good condition with light wear. The handle end of the slider is missing. The cup shows light scattered dents. The total height, with lid, is 12 cm. The total weight is about 173 grams.
