Description
Southern Germany, late 16th century
Dimensions: approx. 33.5 x 9 cm x 8 cm
Detailed late gothic saint with gold lining
This precious wooden figure shows a standing woman with flowing vestments and an ointment vessel, that identifies her as Mary Magdalene. After the Crucifixion and Entombment of Christ, it was Mary Magdalene’s task as disciple of Christ to return to his grave and embalm his corpse together with several other women. However when they arrived there, they only discovered the empty grave and an angel, who proclaimed Christ’s resurrection. Furthermore, the finely carved open hair distinguish her as Mary Magdalene.
The figure was probably produced in the late 16th century in Southern Germany and is reminiscent of Tilman Riemenschneider and Veit Stoß. In the center of the underside there is a hole, which presumably served for fastening. Possibly, the figure was originally part of a winged altar and superimposed to it.
The work shows major signs of age and wear. Parts of the former polychrome and golden lining paint still exists, but the wood and the color have been remarkably affected. The dimensions are approx. 33.5 x. 9 x 8 cm. (nlu)
