Description
England, 19th century. Pair of English leather bound painted demilune form trunks with brass nail heads on stands, probably used for stagecoach/carriage travel. Both painted with complementing scenes. The top of one trunk is painted with a detailed interior dining room scene with two richly dressed women seated and chatting by the fireside, another woman seated holding a child, two men standing near a window along with a servant working, the front and sides of the trunk decorated with three separate courtyard, village and countryside scenes with figures, horses and stagecoaches. The other trunk decorated with continuous scene of figures on horseback and in stagecoaches, riding into a village. Both trunks with original carrying handles to each side, presented on a fitted walnut carved conforming stand on ball and claw feet. Height 35.5", width 44.25", depth 21".
Condition
On both trunks, the painted leather has some raised areas of rippling or bubbling. The paint has crackled and there are areas of flaking. Some of the decorative tacks/nailheads are loose. Tops of leather trunks have some surface scratches. There are scattered cracks and separations at some moldings and joints, particularly noted along the demilune lid and front left side exterior on the trunk with the top painted stagecoach scene. All wear appears to be commensurate with age.
