Decorative vase in bulbous shape with tapered mouth and spiral-like fusing of opaque white glass; a similar vase fetched up to €7,000 at international auctions
The glass artists in Murano have always been particularly innovative seeking for new techniques and designs to stay in the course of time. The 20th century produced many outstanding masters and designers in this field of expertise. One of them was Carlo Scarpa, whose design for the series ‘a spirale' was created around 1937. The simple elegant design does not reflect in any way the great skill of the glassblower who had to bring the white fusing in hot form and perfect turn onto the glass
The vase is provided on the bottom with the etched mark ‘venini murano’ and is in very good condition with only slight insignificant signs of wear. Its height measures 28 cm.
Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978)
Carlo Scarpa was born in Venice in 1906. He studied architecture drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and worked as a lecturer and professor. Some intervening years he worked for the Murano glass workshops and designed for the company Venini & C. His architectural drafts on the other hand were quite influenced by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. (cru)
