These three endearing figures were made by the Lalique and Baccarat around 1970 in France. The two matted glass cats by Lalique are shown sitting and lying in ambush respectively. They show a fur relief and seem to be smirking. The seated Baccarat panther has a smooth crystal-like surface and very fine facial features – an elegant, sublime set of figures.

The cats are in good condition with slight age-related signs of wear. The left ear of the lurking cat is damaged; both cats show scratches on the underside. The figures show the following mark on their undersides: ‘Lalique, France’; ‘Baccarat’; and etched mark ‘Baccarat France’. The Lalique cats measure 9.5 and 21 cm (height); 10 and 11.5 cm (length); 14 and 23 cm (width), respectively. The Baccarat figure measures 16 cm (height); 5 cm (length); 7.5 cm (width).

René Jules Lalique (1860-1945)
The French glass designer and founder of Lalique, René Jules Lalique, was born in 1860 in Champagne. He completed an education in graphic arts at theCollège Turgot and at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, where he learned the techniques of jewelry art. He also served an apprenticeship with the renowned luxury jeweler Louis Aucoc (1850-1932). During two years of study atSydenham College in London, Lalique refined his characteristic style, which is based on natural forms. In 1884, after completing his education, the young artist worked as a jewelry designer for Cartier and others until he and the jeweler Varenne founded the company Lalique & Varenne. René Jules Lalique is still regarded as one of the most famous jewelry and glass artists of the Art Déco.

Baccarat
Baccarat was founded in a small French town called Baccarat in 1775 and was originally known as ‘Sainte-Anne’. The company made a variety of glass objects, among them glasses and chandeliers for a number of royal households. The Baccarat brand was registered in the Parisian commercial registry on the 29th of October 1860. All Baccarat pieces were subsequently marked with the carafe, wine glass and glass in circle symbols.
