This Idell table lamp was designed around 1930 by Christian Dell, a former director of the metal department in the Weimar Bauhaus (1922-1925). It was manufactured by the Gebrüder Kaiser & Co. in Neheim-Hüsten around 1935. The word Idell is a combination of 'Dell' and 'idea'. The lamp is made of chrome-plated and black lacquered metal. The height of the lamp can be adjusted, and the lampshade can be tilted and turned to the sides.

The lamp is marked with 'Kaiser idell ORIGINAL' to the lamp shade. It is in original, good overall condition with major areas of abrasion and paint loss consistent with age and use. The reflecting coating on the inside of the lampshade shows some tiny losses to the edge. The functionality has not been verified and cannot be guaranteed. The total height of the lamp is 42 cm. The diameter of the lampshade is 16 cm.

From 1912-13 Dell studied at the Saxon College of Arts and Crafts in Weimar, Germany. In 1926 he transferred to the Frankfurt School of Art (Städelschule) to lead the metal workshop.

Gebrüder Kaiser & Co. Leuchten KG

The Gebrüder Kaiser & Co. Leuchten KG, otherwise known as Kaiser Leuchten, was a distinguished lamp manufacturer in Neheim. Founded in 1895, the company focused first on the production of lamp components. In developing a cost-effective kerosene lamp made of tinplate the company achieved a breakthrough. After World War I, the production focused more on electronic lamps and Kaiser Leuchten became one of the biggest lamp manufacturers in Neheim. Employing the Bauhaus designer Christian Dell also played a great role in the company's development. The “idell” lamp, designed by Dell, is viewed to this day as a design classic and was produced in large numbers by Kaiser Leuchten from the 1930s through to the 1980s.
