These three Sintrax coffee makers were probably produced in the 1950s and are based on designs of the German Bauhaus designers Wilhelm Wagenfeld and Gerhard Marcks. Back then, the Schott glass factory was Europe's largest specialty glass manufacturer. The Sintrax coffee maker is one of the most legendary products of the Jenaer Glaswerke and captivates through its characteristic bulbous form that was designed by Gerhard Marcks in 1925. Its ebony handle was designed later by Wilhelm Wagenfeld in 1932. The machine operates on the vacuum principle and is made of heat-resistant borosilicate glass. It is composed of a water tank and a funnel-shaped top part. The upper end of the top part can be closed with a glass lid.

The Sintrax coffee makers are in good condition with some wear consistent with age. Two coffee makers are marked with ‘Jenaer Glas/Schott & Gen. Jena/Sintrax’. One of these machines is also marked with ‘Landshut’ and ‘Mainz’. The third machine bears the name of the series ‘Jena Therm’. The three coffee makers can be filled with approximately ¾ liters. The total height with lid is 24 and 27 cm respectively. One lid does not seem to belong to the machine. The set is accompanied with a glass stopper, which keeps the coffee warm.

Gerhard Marcks (1889-1981)

Gerhard Marcks (1889 -1981) was a German sculptor and graphic artist. Beginning in 1908, he worked with his fellow artist Richard Scheibe in a joint atelier. He studied under August Gaul and Georg Kolbe, putting the focus on the area of porcelain in the Schwarzburger ateliers for the Porcelain Unterweißbach under the direction of Max Adolf Pfeiffer. Together with Walter Gropius, he was asked to organize the Cologne Werkbund exhibition in 1914. Later, he worked on serial productions for the stoneware factory Velten-Vordamm. Following this period, he was asked to teach first at the arts and crafts college in Berlin and then later at Bauhaus Weimar. Gerhard Marcks was the head of the Bauhaus pottery in Dirnburg Saale, which was discontinued after the Bauhaus moved to Dessau.

Wilhelm Wagenfeld (1900-1990)

Wilhelm Wagenfeld (1900-1990) began his career in a silver ware manufactory before he came to the Bauhaus in Weimar to study the art of silversmithing. With only 28 years old, he already led the metal workshop of the newly founded Bauhochschule Weimar. Two years later, he began working for the Jenaer Glaswerk Schott & Gen. where his early glass designs have been made. He became a professor in Berlin as well as a chairman for the Lausitzer Glaswerke. After the war, he was again named professor in Berlin. He founded the Werkstatt Wagenfeld in 1954 that he ran until 1978. He designed for such renowned companies as WMF, Johannes Bruchsteiner, Braun and Rosenthal. Some of his designs were shown on the documenta III in Kassel in the Industrial Design section.
