Pal Fried was born in Budapest and studied under Hugo Pohl at the Hungarian Academie, and under Lucien Simone in Paris, where he was influenced by the works of Degas and Renoir. This work dates to before 1947, when he left for the United States and the more commercial style of female figurative work for which he is generally known.
